Things that Can Abort the Reward of Fasting

Things that Can Abort the Reward of Fasting-The holy month of Ramadan has arrived, the month full of grace and forgiveness from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. The opportunity is very valuable to achieve the great forgiveness of Allah Ta'ala by practicing fasting as best as possible zahir and inner that is by keeping our zahir from doing things that break the fast and keep our soul from the things that destroy the reward of fasting so that our fast become perfect zahir and inward.

Speaking of cases that break the fast, it has been known to be known in the books of feqah that existed from among the four madhab of thought such as apostasy, menstruation, childbirth, intercourse, eating and other drinking. Then what about sins such as lying, false oaths, saying dirty, gossiping and etc, whether to cancel the fast or merit fasting alone? As the hadith of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam follows:

"Five cases that cancels the fasting person; lies, ghibahs/gossip, bring into conflict, false oaths and seeing with lust ".
And how is the position of the hadith?
most of the fuqaha from Shafi'iyyah, Hanafiyyah, Malikiyyah and Hanbaliyyah sects said that such matters did not break the fast, except Imam al-Awza'i he said that ghibah/gossip can break the fast and must be repeated, he based one of them with the argument of hadith above and also the following hadith:

Whoever does not abandon lying and lie, then Allah does not care that he abandons his food and drinks it. "(Narrated by Bukhari)
Al-Awza'i's opinion is answered by the scholars as mentioned by the following Imam an-Nawawi:

"Our companions (scholars of Shafi'iyyah) replied of these hadiths other than the last hadith, that is meant is indeed the perfection of fasting and the virtue demanded is to be obtained by guarding from vain actions and dirty speech, not fasting can be canceled with him. The last hadith namely; "The five things that cancels the fasting person", then the hadeeth is not walt be made hujjah/argument. So answered by imam al-Mawardi, al-Mutawalli and besides both, that the intended hadith is to cancel the reward of fasting is not the substance fast itself ". [book of Al-Majmu 'syarah muhadzad 6/356]The hadith is narrated by Ibn Jauzi in his al-Maudhu'at from the hadith 'Anbasah, and he says the hadith is false. Ibn Ma'in said, "Sa'id was a liar, and from Sa'id to Anas, all his convicts were accused. Ibn Abi Hatim said in the book his 'Ilal,' I asked my father about the hadith narrated by Baqiyyah from Muhammad al-Hajjaj from Maisarah bin Abd Rabbih from Jaban from Anas ... then he replied, "This is a liar ...". [book of Nashbu Ar-royah 2/483]While the imam as-Subuki judged dhaif/weak though its meaning is valid:

"Imam as-Subuki says," And the hadith "The five cases that cancel (fasting) fasting, namely ghibah, bring into conflict and so on are dhaif though valid (meaning)". [al-Iqna book 1/220]From the description of the Imam Nawawi, it is understood that the ghibah and the dirty greeting do not break the fast, as for the hadith "Five things that cancel the fasting person ...", it is answered by the scholars that the hadith is false and can not be used as a hujjah/argument to determine the cancellation of the fast. However, Imam al-Mawardi and Imam al-mutawalli replied that the hadith is a matter that canceled the reward of fasting instead of fasting. This means that even though the hadith is considered infernal, but still can accept takwil that is intended to cancel the reward of fasting instead of fasting itself. Thus if there are people who use the hadith as hujjah to determine the cancellation of fasting, then his hujjah/argument is rejected because most of the scholars have set based on authentic hadiths that maxyiat/immoral case such as ghibah/gossip, lie and others do not canceled fasting. But if anyone uses the hadith as a hujjah to set the cancellation of the reward of the fasting man, then this can not be rejected, because imam al-Mawardi, imam al-Mutawawlli and other scholars allow it by accepting the meaning takwilannya that is to cancel the reward fast not his fast. The underlying thing is the number of authentic hadiths about the dangers of the five cases. Ghibah, bring into conflict, lies, false oaths and seeing with lust is indeed haram and must be shunned although not in a state of fasting from the side away from the actions of immoral, and more emphasized to shun for people who fast but from the side of destructing the reward of fasting. Thus, even when fasting is more obligatory to abandon all sinful actions including the five things, because the month of fasting worship is doubled as well as the sin of immoral deeds. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said:

"He who does not abandon lies, lies and foolish deeds, then God does not care that he abandons his food and drinks." (Narrated by Bukari)

Imam ash-Shan'ani commented:

"The hadith is a proof of prohibition of lying and lying and prohibiting foolishness of the fasting, both are forbidden to those who do not fast as well, but its prohibition for the fasting is more emphasized such as prohibition of adultery for a shaykh (old) and pompous nature for the faqir/poor ". [book of Subulus Salam 2/320]

Other scholars such as imam Ibn Ash-Shabbagh commented on the hadith of the five cases as follows:

"As for the hadeeth, it is meant to abort the reward of fasting, so it becomes the meaning of a case that breaks the fast, as the example of the hadith of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam:" Whoever said to his brother while the priest preached, "Be silent", then no jum' at for him ", this hadith does not mean the prayer is void, but what is meant is that the reward of his jum'at is fall so that the meaning of people who do not pray". [al-Bayan fi Madzhabi syafi'i 3/536]So it is not wrong if there is a ustadz who brought the hadith in the context mentioned above scholars that explain the destruction of the reward of fasting instead of fasting itself, because he is not bringing hujjah to declare cancellation of fasting as al-Awza'i opinion. Because such a meaning (destroying the reward of fasting) has been witnessed (syawahid) by many other sahih hadiths, among them:

"Whoever does not abandon lies and lies, Allah does not care that he abandons his food and drinks." (Narrated by Bukhari)
The Prophet also said:

"How many people fast, get nothing from their fasting except hunger and thirst" (Narrated by Al-Hakim, sahih 'ala syartil Bukhari).
Also hadith:

"The one who fasts in worship from the morning until the afternoon since he does not gossiping, if he gossiping then he has ruined (reward) his fast". [al-taisir syarah jami'is shoghir Imam munawi 2/201]. (This hadith is hinted dhaif by the as-Suyuthi imam)In conclusion: Fasting is the refrain from fasting things like eating, drinking and others, as well as refraining from all unlawful matters that can destroy the perfection of fasting like ghibah, lies, false oaths, seeing forbidden and others. Although such immorals are haram done at any time and at any time, but more forbidden for those who fast as the above hadiths so as not to damage the reward of fasting. Wallahu A'lam. Submission of Yusuf Qordhowi:
