The Meaning of SHAHADA

The Shahada is the foundation and basis of the five pillars of Islam, as well as the spirit, core and foundation of all Islamic teachings.
The Shahada comes from the Arabic word syahida (شهد) which means "he has witnessed". The sentence in the Islamic Shari'a is a statement of belief as well as recognition of the oneness of God (Allah) and Muhammad as His apostle.
Shahada is also called Syahadatain because it consists of 2 sentences (In Arabic Syahadatain means 2 sentences Syahadat). The first sentence is the shahadah at-tawhid, and the second sentence is the martyr of the apostle.
The two sentences of the shahadah are:
First sentence: 'ašhadu'al lā ilāha illa l-Lāh
meaning: I testify that there is no God but Allah
Second sentence:
wa'ašhadu'anna muḥammadar rasūlu l-Lāh
meaning: and I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.
